Twenty minutes later, Madison relayed the message to her best friend. With hugs and greetings out of the way, they settled around Granny Bert’s kitchen table as the coffee brewed.

“That boy,” Genny said, shaking her head. “Tell him I’ll see what I can do.” She turned to Granny Bert and gave her a no-nonsense look. “You gave us all quite a scare, young lady. I trust you’re better now and following the doctor’s orders?”

“For the most part,” the older woman agreed. “Sometimes, you have to sift through those orders to find the best parts.”

“She’s referring to her caffeine intake,” Madison explained. “The doctor told her to limit her coffee and tea consumption, but Granny’s having a little trouble following through.”

“I beg to differ,” her grandmother argued. “He said limit, not eliminate. I’ll have you know, yesterday I drank two cups less coffee than normal, and only had one glass of sweet tea all day long.”

“Two less than how many? Two dozen?”

Granny Bert sniffed at Madison’s suspicious tone. “Doesn’t matter. What matters is that I cut back. Now, enough talk about me. I can tell by that glow on Genny’s face that her second honeymoon was a humdinger. Give us all the details, girl.”

A pretty blush stained Genny’s cheeks. “Maybe not all the details,” she giggled, thankful of how quickly Cutter had overcome being intimidated by the cherubs. “Let’s just say it was a wonderful week. The accommodations were very posh and luxurious, with an eye for detail. In my book, a truly first-rate hotel has four things. A good bed, good water pressure, a good chair to sit in, and good food.” She ticked off all four factors on her fingers, before pressing a hand to her stomach. “They had all four, although the chef was a little too free with the spices. My tummy has had a bit of trouble adjusting.” She clicked her tongue as she lamented, “I don’t know why people think they have to over-season food, when all they really need is the correct cooking technique.”

“Overall, four stars or five?” Maddy asked as she got up to pour coffee.

Genny hesitated with her answer. “Hard to say. The inn itself was fantastic.”

“But?”

“The staff was lazy, weren’t they?” Granny Bert guessed. “That’s the trouble with young folks today. They don’t understand the concept of a hard day’s work.”

“No, the staff was amazing. They were all very well trained, from their level of service to their presentation. Marcella Durant runs a tight ship. On the surface, it was hard to find fault with hardly anything.”

After serving the others, Madison slid back into her chair with her own cup. “Beneath the surface?”

Genny blew on her coffee before answering. “Something is going on there. We can’t put our finger on it, but both of us got the impression that something more was happening at Cherubdipity than meets the eye.”

“Cherubdipity?” scoffed Granny Bert. “That’s your first hint right there. What kind of name is that?”

“It’s a play on the words ‘cherub’ and ‘serendipity’.
